Marcel van Beek Biography

Germany, born 1990

Marcel van Beek, born in Bonn in 1990, is a German visual artist and fine-art photographer based in Leipzig. He studied painting, graphic art and photography at Alanus University of Arts and Social Sciences, graduating with distinction with a Bachelor of Fine Arts.
His work explores the uncanny within the familiar. Abandoned architecture, shadowed passages, forests, water, botanical forms and human figures become carriers of memory, psychological tension and latent presence. Through unusual perspectives, reflections, inversion, motion blur and carefully controlled colour, van Beek creates images situated between representation and abstraction, reality and apparition.
Recurring motifs include thresholds, hidden gateways, distorted spaces and seemingly inanimate forms that begin to resemble bodies, creatures or watchful beings. Rather than illustrating horror directly, his photographs allow unease to emerge slowly from ordinary places and materials. His practice combines a painterly sensitivity to surface and composition with an interest in mythology, ecology, transformation and the darker territories of perception.
Since 2014, his work has been presented in solo and group exhibitions and has received numerous international distinctions in fine-art, conceptual, nature, architectural and black-and-white photography.
