This painting from the series Transitions fixes the instant in which autonomy gives way: plague doctors stand ready—unyielding rather than hostile—whose glass eyes and beaked masks confer patienthood before the bed is reached. The setting is theatrical, almost liturgical; instruments wait like small sentences. In the background Lucifer falls, a portent rather than an illustration: the collapse of will, the end of defiance. Van Beek stages the surrender of control—an entry into the regime of routines, protocols, into the hands of others. A warm, muted palette feigns consolation, yet the light is diagnostic: it reveals rather than soothes. Transitions are seldom voluntary; the artist does not show death, but the anteroom where the decision may already have been made.
