In “Nosferatu’s Vigil”, Marcel van Beek looks across a city whose contours are almost entirely consumed by darkness. The pointed church tower, marked by its luminous clock faces, becomes a watchful nocturnal presence, recalling a sentinel suspended above the sleeping rooftops. A diffuse band of light hovers along the horizon before dissolving into the grainy sky, creating a state between night and dawn. Scattered windows and isolated lights offer the few remaining signs of human presence. Within his Nocturnes series, van Beek treats darkness as an active pictorial force: it erases detail, muffles the city and transforms the urban landscape into a stage for solitude, unease and fragile shelter.
