In „The Isle of the Dead“, the artist offers a compelling contemporary reimagining of Böcklin’s iconic motif. Enlarged in scale, the composition draws the viewer head-on into the scene, while the heightened palette sets warm, stony ochres against a violet-blue vault of sky in crisp, decisive cuts. Broad, tectonic brushwork constructs the island in powerful planes—an intentional stripping-back of ornament that feels both modern and assured.
At the centre, the cypress grove becomes a dense, near-black negative mass: a core of absolute stillness. The narrative, too, is subtly but brilliantly reset. The emblematic boat remains, yet glides without a helmsman, as if mysteriously drawn by the island itself. Water is rendered in quiet, flattened fields with little reflection, while a pale shoreline to the right opens the space into an almost cinematic topography, its contours sharpened with a draughtsman’s clarity. Respectfully quoting Böcklin while decisively transforming format, colour and stance, the work achieves a striking hybrid grammar between painting and film.
