Artwork description

*Nous étions encore humains* (“We Were Still Human”) evokes a tipping point—a moment when humanity has not yet fully vanished, yet something irreversible is already underway. Bodies retain familiar fragments, while other forms appear to invade, extend, or replace them.
The composition functions as a series of thresholds. The human face initially acts as a lingering memory. Lower down, the forms become more organic and complex, eventually merging with an environment where the boundaries between body, matter, and structure dissolve. Red drips connect these various states, suggesting a shared wound, a contamination, or a ritual.
The title introduces a retrospective dimension. The word “still” implies an observer looking back from a time after the transformation, recalling an era when human identity remained recognizable. The work thus questions what truly defines the human when the body changes: memory, consciousness, language, or the capacity to recognize the other.
