Before the night recognizes us by Marc Tremblay (Original Painting)

*Avant que la nuit nous reconnaisse* (Before Night Recognizes Us) presents a suspended universe populated by figures that seem to be awaiting something invisible. The characters appear as isolated, almost ritualistic presences, gathered beneath a black celestial body that dominates the composition. There is no indication of whether they are moving toward an event or if they already belong to a world that is no longer quite our own.
The dark disc acts as a focal point. It might evoke an eclipse, an extinguished sun, or an opening into the unknown. The burlap, layered papers, tears, and red drips lend the work a raw materiality, as if time itself were encroaching upon the image.
The inscription “Un rire lointain” (A Distant Laughter) introduces an off-screen presence. The title transforms the night into an entity capable of looking and recognizing. The work is situated in the fragile moment preceding this encounter—just before the unknown turns its gaze toward us.
