My name is Mick J, originally from East London , now living in Devon and am a self-taught artist. I have been painting professionally for over 30 years , working with various mediums , and have sold paintings worldwide.

Now painting primarily in oils , I am drawn to the interplay between life and death, the physical and the symbolic, seeking to capture the passage of time as it manifests in both human experience and material culture. My work is influenced by historical iconography, maritime lore, imagined realism and the mythology of relics.

My paintings reflect a sustained interest in the textures and patinas of aged surfaces, from corroded metal helmets to cracked porcelain dolls. By rendering these elements with meticulous attention to light and shadow, I aim to evoke a sense of presence that is both tangible and unsettling. The figures and objects I portray are often imbued with a quiet intensity, inviting contemplation on resilience, decay, and the stories embedded within.

My creative process begins with research into historical references and symbolic motifs, followed by careful composition that balances realism with an atmospheric mood. I work in layers, building texture and depth to enhance the tactile quality of surfaces and the weight of the subjects portrayed. Colour palettes tend toward sombre, muted tones punctuated by strategic highlights—such as the deep reds of fabric or the gleam of jewels .

Ultimately, my work attempts to engage viewers in a dialogue about the passage of time, and the enduring human fascination with mortality.
