The painting depicts a white child wrapped in the lap of a black mother. The work contains several meanings including ethnic mixing and acceptance of the sense of diversity. In the subconscious the work evokes the image of a dark motherhood in contrast to the candid face of the child, an expression of the sense of estrangement generated by social non-recognition. The embrace of the mother (allusion to a return and reconciliation with the mother-earth Africa, an intact mother, primordial, but also obscure because she hides her face concealing her own sense of guilt) expresses the innate need for maternal reunion.
The painting focuses on the theme of social “no-recognition” and discrimination in relation to the concepts of identity, gender and race. In fact, the white child wrapped in the womb of a black mother represents the sense of alienation due to the no ethnic, cultural and social recognition of the individual in contemporary society whose process of homologation brought about by the technological era has taken away the right to be recognized as an individual and an artist.
