Artwork description
Sandra Yagi did a series of paintings showing the chimpanzee flayed to expose its musculature. When the fur and skin is stripped away, the similarities between human and chimp become most apparent.
Humans often believe that they are above the rest of the animal kingdom, however, all of our bodies and brains are based on prior animal ancestors. Our brains have emotional centers that are primitive and share much in common with reptiles and mammals. We do not attribute any characteristics such as empathy, feelings of pain, loss, or sorrow to our fellow animals.
In the painting Anatomical Chimp with Skull, a chimp is rendered in a method inspired by Andreas Vesalius, the great father of scientific anatomical studies. Vesalius did an illustration of a human skeleton contemplating a human skull. In this painting, the chimp, which bears many similarities to humans, contemplates his own mortality in the same way as a human.
