A single hand hangs limp from an unseen ledge, fingers slightly curled, bleeding into a field that has already settled around it.

One hand, seen only from the forearm, hangs from a ledge that is never shown. It does not grip, does not reach — it simply falls forward, limp and lightly curled, the way a body’s hand falls when there is no longer anyone to hold it up. The hand is damaged — cut, raw, bleeding — and the blood does not stay on the skin: it crosses into the surrounding field and stains it. That field is left deliberately unspecified, a chaos of ink, drip and graphite. Its dark lines bristle around the limb but no longer threaten it — whatever they were going to do has already been done. The hand is built in heavy impasto, organic and weighted, while the unnatural, near-chemical brightness of the field refuses to settle. The Vow is a bridge work between TSUMETAI’s figurative and abstract languages — and a study of what a promise leaves behind when the body that made it is gone.
