Artwork description
A horned figure with sewn lips smiles through cracking stitches. One eye hidden, the other gone. Behind it, an owl glows.
A horned, cracked, blood-spattered figure stands at the centre. Where the head should rise between the horns, there is empty dark. The face is below: sewn lips, with a smile forcing through the stitches until they crack and bleed. One eye is hidden behind the figure’s own hand, a single eye peering out between the fingers. Where the other eye should be, there is only a black hole. Behind the figure, in the dark space between the horns, an owl shines.
PET sits between Paralysis and Givin’ in TSUMETAI’s first sustained period of canvas work. It is the painting where the figure stops being the one watched and becomes the one inhabited — the horned, wounded body is no longer something that visits the artist, it is the artist’s own form. The smile forcing through the stitches is the moment composure cannot hold any longer, but the figure tries to hold it anyway.
The owl behind the figure does not threaten — it sees what the figure can no longer see.
