This painting was created during the pandemic where I felt incredibly overwhelmed in my life. I decided to express that through garbage, something I find incredibly overwhelming, and within the garbage I thought of all the childhood toys I had once loved but are now most likely in a landfill somewhere. The woman sitting on top of the garbage is referenced from a popular early 19th century photograph trend called ‘mourning’ poses. When people lost loved ones, they would commemorate them by covering their faces in mourning. This piece ignited the idea of my latest series, titled “May This Mess Be Blessed”
