Artwork description
Cempasuchil is the most representative flower of the Día de Muertos in Mexico. Its name comes from the words “cempohualli” twenty and “xóchitl” flower.
The legend of Xóchitl and Huitzlin tells the story of a young couple in love who offered flowers to Tonatiuh, the god of the 5th son, every day. Huitzlin had to go to war and there he died. Xóchitl asked Tonatiuh to unite with her lover. Out of mercy, the god accepted the request and transformed Xóchitl into a beautiful flower. One day, the soul of Huitzlin, in the form of a hummingbird, was attracted by the scent of the flower and when the bird landed on it, the flower bloomed.
