Artwork description
The first time I saw a depiction of the crucifixion, I as 5 or 6. I knew nothing of Christian mythology, but I was drawn to the raw aesthetic power of the violence and the dynamic anatomy therein . Coming from a non-religious background, I’ve often felt drawn to the iconography of Christian martyrs for this same reason. In my own work I often dream up new agonies for anonymous martyrs in a secular context. When the religiosity of these passions is stripped away, one can contemplate the sublime beauty of the human body so rigorously manipulated.
