Artwork description

This piece is inspired by the of the Christian myth surrounding the death of John the Baptist at the hands of King Herod, and Oscar Wilde’s further interpretation of said myth. In both versions, the head of John was secured in exchange for an erotic dance performed by the princess Salome, at the urging of her mother. In Wilde’s version, the dance involves the removal of seven veils in a sort of proto-strip-tease. I’ve contrived the eighth veil as one draped over the severed head for presentation to Salome. While this myth is traditionally seen as a classic martyrdom of a saint at the hands of non-believers, characterizing Salome as a sinful temptress and villain, I see this story as a parable extolling the virtues of feminine sexual power over the ignorance of the faithful.
