A hand colored zinc etching on linen and cotton paper, *The Trial of Order* explores the tension between chaos and order through the contrasting figures of Dionysus and Athena. Dionysus lies fallen among the ruins, surrounded by the aftermath of spectacle, excess, and destructive abandon. Athena remains standing, embodying reason, discipline, and the effort to restore order.
The ruined setting makes this conflict both physical and symbolic. What remains after destruction becomes the ground on which order must be rebuilt. The image considers the fragile balance between impulse and restraint, and the point at which forces of liberation become forces of collapse.
Etched lines give structure and detail to the composition, while hand applied watercolor adds tonal variation and atmosphere. The linen and cotton paper provides a textured surface that complements the work’s imagery of ruins and weathered forms.
