Artwork description

This drawing was made in 2005 and marks an early moment when my work began to move away from academic study and toward a personal visual language. Rather than depicting existing animals or landscapes, the image presents an invented ecosystem in which unfamiliar organisms appear as if they belong naturally to their environment. The creature at the water’s edge is neither fully mammal nor plant nor reptile, but a hybrid life form shaped by observation, imagination, and a fascination with biological structure.

The drawing is constructed through detailed ink line, allowing textures; fur, bark, foliage, and ground to emerge through variation in density and rhythm. The landscape is intentionally quiet and sparse, creating a still environment in which the organism appears almost like a specimen discovered in the wild. In this sense, the work borrows something from the tradition of natural history illustration, though the species depicted exists only within the imagination.
