Demeter appears in a moment of withdrawal, her face partially obscured by leaves and her eyes closed. I wanted the image to suggest a period when growth has been withheld rather than lost. The dormant interval that is as much a part of the natural cycle as abundance.
The image was engraved directly into a copper plate, using fine lines and cross hatching to build the figure, foliage, and shadows. Engraving is a slow and resistant process; every mark is physically cut into the metal and remains part of the plate. That deliberate method suited the subject. After printing, I added watercolor by hand, allowing the color to sit lightly over the engraved structure without obscuring the linework.
