“It sounded like a gypsy prayer. The boy had met many gypsies on his way before, they too were traveling, but they had no sheep. People said that the gypsies lived by deceiving others. It was also said that they had made a deal with demons and kidnapped little children for to use as slaves in their mysterious camps. When he was a small child, the young shepherd was terrified at the idea that he might be abducted by gypsies, and this old fear resurfaced as the old woman held his hands.
“But there is, the image of Christ”, he thought, trying to calm down. He didn’t want his hand to start shaking, lest the old woman sense his fear. He silently said an “Our Father”.
– Interesting, said the old woman, without looking up from the boy’s hand.”
