“The root of hunger is not found in gods or stars, but in the actions of men.”
– Murray N. Rothband
El Hambre, Spanish for Hunger, explores the bloodcurdling depths of human consumption where insatiable appetites permeate the senses. The equal opportunity to survive or surrender in this malodorous nightmare conceived by Dos Diablos and Karikatura is illustrated through their subjects’ loyalty to circumstance: Utensils impale busts resembling human-swine halfbreeds– one with “BITE ME” salaciously carved into its flesh– while ceramic wall hangings of beady-eyed cat creatures sprout from piles of decadent and excessively syrupy desserts. Cringeworthy at first glance, but a second glance offers introspection into the subjects’ welcomed acceptance of these overindulged and cannibalistic rituals.
Both artists describe their work as a mirror reflecting the psyche of the viewer. The pieces in El Hambre can be compared to the artists’ own voracious need to always be creating. To them, the work itself is first a deep meditation on process, and the raw, scabrous imagery arrives second.
Dos Diablos was born in Jalisco, Mexico in 1982. He lives and works in Zapopan, Mexico.
Karikatura was born in Guadalajara, Mexico in 1986. She lives and works in Guadalajara and San Diego.
