Petra Preželj Biography

Slovenia, born 1975

My artworks can be described as emotionally strong and visually rich, with a deep emphasis on the inner state, people and everyday scenes, often in the context of social and cultural dimensions. My works include different techniques, but stand out through the recognition of strong colors, expressive drawing and a specific approach to portraits. My paintings often contain elements of abstraction, but at the same time they can also be recognized as figurative works, in which faces, figures and details receive special attention.

I am combining emotions with everyday life, creating an intense and sometimes melancholic atmosphere.

The presence of textures and striking lines is also my characteristic, which contributes to the dynamism and expressiveness of my works. Through my paintings, I often explores deeply personal, intimate topics, but at the same time I do not avoid socially engaged motives.

I made gentle illustrations for children and also dark paintings for adults.

My special love is scratchboard. Really enjoy when I am making it.

Petra Preželj exhibitions, studies, awards...

She was born in Ljubljana (Slovenia), where she also lives and works.

She works in the field of illustration, visual communication and painting.

In 2000, she graduated at the Ljubljana Academy of Fine Arts and Design (Slovenia).

Since 2002, she has had the status of a self-employed person granted by the Ministry of Culture.

In 2004, she received Hinko Smrekar's acknowledgement for an original artistic approach at the 6th Slovenian Biennial of Illustration in Ljubljana (Slovenia).

In 2011, she received Honorary diploma of the international Golden Pen of Belgrade at the 46th Golden Pen of Belgrade (11th International Biennial of Illustration) in Belgrade (Serbia).

In 2012, she received Hinko Smrekar Accolade at the 10th Slovenian Biennial of Illustration in Ljubljana (Slovenia).

In 2023, she received Merit at 20. International Illustration Awards Show 3x3 (3×3, the Magazine of Contemporary Illustration) in New York.

In 2025, she received special recognition at 17th international art award Ex-tempore Ptuj Karneval in Ptuj (Slovenia).

She has been exhibiting regularly at home and abroad since 2003.
