Karoliina Kilpelä Biography

Finland, born 1987

I live in Finland, Kouvola. I'm Self-taught artist and my mainmedium is acrylics on canvas, mostly matt black with glossy white to make everything gloomy, but in a twisted way beautiful. I'm also doing art sometimes with every kind of supplies I can get in my hands.

Norther nature, mythologies and mentalhealth are my most common resources of inspiration. Especially Tuonela, ancient finnish version from the world of dead. Macabre art have always facinated me.

As a child I feared dark. I thought there are monsters and spirits that can harm me. All the dark shadows in the corners, under trees, moonlit that makes everything looking surreal. But when I grew up, I noticed that there can be beautiness in the shadows. Even death can be calming.

My favorite part of every living creature is skull, because we are all equal when it comes to skulls. Skulls are also protecting our most important part of body. That small, but very powerfull and creative squishy machine.
